The Future of Urban Mobility: How Big Data is Impacting Modes of Transportation in the Smart City

Wednesday, April 30th, 2014, 12:30pm - 2:30pm EDT / Streamed Panel Discussion: 11:00am - 1:30pm PDT / 1:00pm - 2:30pm EDT / 19:00 - 20:30 (Paris-Brussels)

Meeting in New York

According to a study by NYU’s Wagner School of Public Policy, ‘between 2010 and 2050, the number of people living in the world’s urban areas is expected to grow by 80 percent – from 3.5 billion to 6.3 billion’. This growth will create problems for urban mobility by increasing congestion, raising GHG emissions, and accelerating the deterioration of transportation infrastructure.

The influx of big data, mobile apps, and M2M technology are creating a paradigm shift toward new modes of transportation such as ride sharing, pedestrianism, and public transport. In this meeting we examine innovations that are changing the landscape of urban mobility, as well as the increasingly interrelated roles that transportation, buildings, and the electricity grid play in smart cities.
