US Offshore Wind: Benchmarks and Bellwethers

Thursday, November 29th 2012 9:30am- 12:30pm ET / Streamed Panel Discussion: 7:00am - 9:00am PT / 10:00am - 12:00pm ET / 16:00 - 18:00 (Paris-Frankfurt)

Meeting in New York

Location: 10 Rockefeller Plaza, 16th Floor, New York, NY 10020

Wind is currently the most popular renewable energy resource in the United States and it is slated to continue to dominate the renewable energy mix far into the future. Undoubtedly, offshore wind will play a large role in that dominance, given the U.S.’ impressive offshore resource abundance and grid congestion along its east coast; according to the DOE and the NY State Grid Operator the total offshore wind potential of the U.S. is over 4,000 GW and consumers can save $300 million in wholesale electricity costs for every 1 GW of wind on the grid. Large corporate investors and technology firms understand this: Google has invested in the Atlantic Backbone Transmission project and VESTAS has said it is counting on the US market for most of its growth.

In this meeting, our panel of industry experts will examine the major remaining barriers and provide case studies and updates on current projects.

·         How can the US position itself as a global player in offshore wind?

·         Examination of the DOE’s initiative (i.e. technology development, removing market barriers, and advanced technology demonstration projects). Are these the right initiatives to spur development?

·         What are ways that the private and public sector can work together to lower costs and create other project incentives?

·         Are there opportunities for the states to tackle the barriers independently of the federal government?
