According to the U.S. EPA, transportation has accounted for 28% of the total greenhouse gas emissions in the United States which has increased by 18% since 1990 (link). In an effort to combat this problem, smarter transportation planning has become paramount especially due to the increasing complexity of urban environments. An intelligent transportation infrastructure comprises of multiple segments including electric vehicle, traffic management, charging stations, smart parking and real-time data management. The key to smart mobility is the coordination of these overall systems as whole in order to optimize the overall transportation infrastructure. Data from these systems is collected, analyzed, and then integrated to not only manage, but predict traffic patterns to alleviate congestion, reduce carbon emissions, and promote safety.
The adoption of the electrification of transportation requires utilities and service providers to rely on energy storage and other renewable energy sources to mitigate strain on the grid during peak times. This roundtable discussion will analyze the growth of the smart transportation market, emerging technological advances and how urban mobility manifests itself into a more efficient system.
