Solar Deployment Opportunities in the Middle East and North Africa

December 16th, 9:00am - 10:00am EST/ 15:00 - 16:00 Central European Time

Given its abundance in solar radiance, with 300 sunny days a year equaling roughly 6kwh per square meter per day, Middle Eastern and North African countries are aggressively exploring the solar opportunity. The Gulf Cooperation Council, comprised of Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, has set in motion plans to invest $155 billion in solar projects to be fully developed in 2017, yielding 84GW of power. Meanwhile, $660 million is being invested in Algeria, Egypt, Jordan, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia, through the Climate Investment Fund (CIF), which is managed by multilateral banks.

Faced with a growing dependence on oil, and the increasingly attractive business case for solar, MENA countries are aggressively embracing solar, by setting targets and initiatives. For example, the UAE has set a target of 7% renewables generation by 2020, and has launched the Masdar Initiative, in conjunction with BP and Royal Dutch Shell, to further the deployment of clean energy in the region.

The arrival and commercial viability of new and complementary power plant technologies such as large scale battery storage as well as biomass and fuel cell generators open additional opportunities for deployment of advanced, reliable and competitive power plants.

In this meeting, our expert presenters will elucidate the investment opportunity for solar and complementary power technologies in the Middle East and North Africa.
