Online Board Meeting: Smart Grid
INTERNATIONAL (United States, France, Germany)
Thursday, December 9, 2010, 5pm-6pm GMT + 1/ 11am-12pm EST/ 8am–9am PST
In order to deliver the potential benefits of costs savings and reduced energy use, the smart grid infrastructure fundamentally relies on digital technology and two-way communications. But these new technologies – in the form of smart meters and other smart home appliances – present a new layer of vulnerability subject to hacking and security threats. Smart grid technology providers are pressed to get security measures in place before an extensive infrastructure rollout. And consumers are expressing privacy concerns while demanding protections for personal data. In this international board meeting, we hear from experts on the global implications and strategies being used to enhance smart grid security and protect consumer privacy.
- What technologies and security practices are most effective in protecting consumer data?
- How can partnerships -- between technology providers, utilities, and regulators -- enhance cybersecuirty of the smart grid?
- What standards exist for security protection? How do they differ by state? By country?
- What is the role of third parties in gaining access to consumer data?
- What policies are in place to prevent utilities from sharing energy usage data with third-parties without consumers consent?
