China has surpassed the US in cleantech investing, gained dominance in solar PV manufacturing and is now becoming a leader in producing wind turbines. Moreover, 2010 figures for inbound and outbound M&A deals indicated that China accounted for over 8% of global M&A activity with no signs of a downturn in 2011 (source). However, to varying extents, the Chinese economy remains “unknown territory” to foreigners – a rising power with its own set of behaviors and symptoms. Without reliable market analysis, thorough company valuations, and a diligent watch on macroeconomic and policy activity, this market can be wrought with risk. To develop an intelligent approach we solicit advice from our panel who will offer their experience and knowledge in assessing the China opportunity as it relates to the thriving renewables market.
- Where are points of market entry and what are accurate channels of intelligence to inform business strategies and find promising opportunities in the renewables market in China?
- How will changes in the M&A regulatory environment impact the China clean-technology landscape?
- What kind of continued government support, both in terms of per capita spending as well as legislative policy, are we likely to see in 2011 for the renewables market? Progress on the 12th Five Year Plan?
- Assessment of reactions and responses to China’s export halt on Rare Earth Elements: what is the current outlook?
- Do China’s enormous strides over the past few years hint that it has reached peak growth? What indicators challenge or support this notion?
