The recent AGRION panel on Waste to Energy concluded that sludge and municipal solid waste (MSW) have no master – they go where they are the most valued for end-users or cheapest to dispose of. In the variety of solutions for dealing with waste, each have their own pitfalls and limitations-- Anaerobic digestion requires space and has a 100-year lifecycle; thermal processing poses problems of scale and grows within an ever increasing regulatory framework.
Nutrient recovery is a growing alternative to waste disposal and incineration. New technology is being developed to transform waste streams into high-value, environmentally safe commercial products. In this session, we will explore how nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, and other minerals can be recovered from wastewater and MSW and turned into valuable products such as plastics and fertilizers.
