A Cost Comparison: Energy Efficiency and Solar
| Tweeter |
Online Board Meeting
Thursday, November 18, 2010, 10am - 11am PST/ 1pm - 2pm EST
The number one hindrance to a higher adoption rate of solar, other renewables, and energy efficiency upgrades is cost. In theory, energy saving upgrades are advantageous—they help the environment and your pocket. But when the numbers are crunched, the homeowner or building owner assessing the upgrade will always ask: is this a bankable investment?
This board meeting will explore a cost comparison of energy efficiency upgrades vs. solar PV for the home and commercial/multi-unit building. We will temporarily put aside the “conserve first, generate later” debate and will ask what energy saving investment has the strongest financial case.
- What is the net cost to install, the yearly savings, and the payback period of EE upgrades and solar PV? What metrics and factors are considered in this financial assessment?
- Which offers the greatest added value to the home or building?
- In what order should improvements be conducted and why? Does order shift based on the level of proposed energy improvements (gradual vs. deep retrofits)? What retrofits offer the fastest payback? The longest?
- What tools and experts exist for energy audits?
- What external factors affect a cost assessment (climate, age of home, etc.)?
- What financing programs, incentives, and policies exist that may tilt the scales in this debate?
