V2G Update: Charging Station Networks, Battery Capability, and Electric Vehicles

Wednesday, February 9th, 2011, 8:30am - 11:30am PST

Smart Grid | Electric Vehicles | Transports

In April 2010, Agrion hosted the event, "Vehicle to Grid: How Disruptive Will It Be?" highlighting the current trends for V2G infrastructure, battery development and standards, and charging station deployments. Discussions centered on the potential for vehicle-to-grid technology to effectively sell demand response services and how the smart grid helps enable the V2G industry. Today, the market potential for V2G remains poised for explosive growth. According to a recent report by GlobalData, the global V2G market will grow to $40.4 billion in 2020 (with a U.S. market share of $12.4 billion) up from $2.2 billion globally in 2012. But while the market forecasts appear rosy, the mechanisms driving that growth will depend upon many variables including consumer adoption, infrastructure development, and the ramping up of smart grid technologies. What technologies are driving innovation for the V2G market? What business models will succeed in keeping production and infrastructure costs low while encouraging rapid adoption of electric vehicles?

08:30am:    Reception, Networking and Continental Breakfast

08:50am:    Welcome and Introduction

09:00am:    Panel Discussion Begins

1.    Infrastructure & Integration

  • Is the current pace of infrastructure development keeping up with market growth?
  • Have charging networks paired with utilities?
  • Who are the new entrants in the charging infrastructure market?
  • Load-leveling, storage considerations, options to boost grid capacity, and network stability
  • What are the current options for home charging, public charging, and fast charging?
  • What is the role of service providers in network management and account management for customers?

2.    Battery Performance & Evolution

  • Have EV battery capabilities improved and become more cost-effective? What are the current limitations?
  • What software applications are available to monitor battery levels, charging levels, V2G, and G2V capabilities?
  • What role will smartphone apps and telematics play in customer management for V2G?

3.    Pricing & Consumer Adoption

  • What is the current state of deployments rolled out in 2010?
  • What are the financial incentives and rebate opportunities for EV customers?
  • Who is the target market for EV adoption? What are the current buying trends?
  • How important is the role of V2G in driving the growth of the electric vehicle market?
