Collecting accurate, real-time information is a critical factor for the smart grid to deliver the expected benefits of costs savings, dynamic pricing, and reduced energy use. But the staggering amount data generated by the smart grid infrastructure presents formidable challenges for utilities and service providers in collecting, monitoring, and protecting the data gathered. In this onsite meeting, an expert panel discusses the technologies and business practices best suited for developing a data management strategy.
08:30am: Reception, Networking and Continental Breakfast
08:50am: Welcome and Introduction
09:00am: Panel Discussion Begins
1. Market Opportunities
- Who will emerge as market leaders in management platforms, functions, and operations?
- Which opportunities exist for applications beyond those for advanced meter infrastructure and demand response?
- Will there be such thing as a “killer app” for smart grid data management?
- What opportunities exist for data analytics and business intelligence?
2. Security & Privacy
- Who is the owner of the data: utilities, consumers, or third-parties?
- What top-level considerations should be in place to enhance smart grid security and protect consumer privacy?
- Does third-party access to consumer data compromise the security and integrity of data?
- What is the role of standards in managing and securing smart grid data?
3. Stakeholders Buy-In
- What are the effective strategies for utilities to engage with consumers, regulators, and technology partners in communicating data management policies?
- How should technology and service providers engage with consumers? What are some effective customer-facing applications?
- What role do regulators play in data management of smart meters?
4. Technology Challenges
- What challenges exist for analyzing, storing, and integrating data with the smart grid infrastructure? Ability to scale?
- What is the role of cloud computing?
- What data needs to be collected and how often is enough?
