Healthy Buildings and Materials Transparency in the Built Environment

Wednesday, October 2nd 2013, 1:00pm - 4:00pm PDT / Video Recording will be available shortly after

Meeting in San Francisco

Building materials, furniture and chemicals found in every day products have a significant impact on the environment and human health. Additionally, the US Environmental Protection Agency found that people spend 90% of their time indoors where health risks are two to five times greater than outdoors[1].

Until now, specifications regulating the use of building materials have been focused on prohibiting and eliminating “worst in class chemicals”, building codes and voluntary green building certifications. Growing concern for indoor air quality, human health and toxicity in the built environment has shifted the trend towards full disclosure and transparency of product components and providing more information on healthier alternatives.

The purpose of this roundtable is to understand the risks and impacts to human health and the environment associated with building materials throughout their lifecycle. Our expert panel will review the changing landscape of green buildings and health concerns, various tools and standards appearing on the market place today and how to compare the environmental performance of materials.
