What is the Future of Air Transport?
Wednesday, October 8th 2008 from 9:00am - 12:00pm

Global air transportation accounts for 2.5% of the world’s CO² emissions linked to the consumption of fossil fuels. Air transportation is growing faster than the economy at 4 to 5% per year over 30 years.
This is about double the economic growth. How long can this last?

 1- Reminder of Market Developments
•    Explosion of the demand and continued drop in the price per mile traveled. Structure of the demand for AT (air transportation): business, tourism, rapid delivery, freight…
•     Pricing (the very specific reasoning behind price fixing in air transportation) and sectioning of the offer (business, first class, tourism…)
•     The role of low cost companies: Market share, profitability, and added value
•     Qualitative and quantitative outlooks

2- Air travel and Greenhouse Gases
•     Air travel consumption. Comparison with other modes of transportation.
•     Technology: Which alternative to fossil fuel will aircraft manufacturers use?  When will there be a « zero emission » aircraft? Is this possible? What are engine manufacturers planning?

3- Air transportation and the End of Oil
•    What represents the price of oil in the ticket price?
•    Price flexibility of air transportation according to demand
•    Does low cost air transportation have a future?
•    Alternatives to kerosene (steam or pedal powered airplanes…)
•    What is the future of the A380 (Airbus)?

Energy and Environmental Constraints Facing Road Transportation
Wednesday, September 10th 2008 from 9:00am -12:00pm

1- Impact of Oil Prices on Road Transportation
•    Volumetric analysis of the market (short distances, TIR “International Road Transport”…)
•    Transportation companies (size, concentration…)
•    Flexibility of road freight compared to the price of oil
•    Social impact (employment, risks in terms of the public and traffic) and economic (what might be the evolution in the price of road freight in ten years to come? Evaluation of its role on the final price of products.)

2- Evolution of the Fundamental Characteristics of the Motor Vehicle
•    How is the total number of cars in France managed? (Life cycle, renewal…)
•    The constraint of greenhouse gas
•    Oil constraint
•    Societal constraint
•    On what technology do builders rely: Fuel cells, hybrid, stop & start? What are the first conceivable developments in a very short term? Can we drive the trucks that do not use oil?

 3- Evolution of Freight Techniques
•    Management of transportation station in production and distribution companies
•    « Piggyback » and « shipping »
