Geothermal in the Future European Union Energy Mix 2050

Wednesday, June 6th, 8:00-9:00am San Francisco / 11:00am-12:00pm New York / 5:00-6:00pm Paris and Frankfurt

Join us to learn about the EGEC's recommendations for a successful post-2020 energy strategy.
Key topics discussed will include:
  • Member States and the role of the European Commission in setting ambitious binding renewable energy targets for 2030
  • Policy-makers and the potential of geothermal energy for both electricity and heating and cooling
  • The importance of prioritizing geothermal research and development
  • How a balanced approach in the deployment of renewables would share and reduce investment requirements and should provide incentives for geothermal and reward its benefits for providing heat and power 24 hours a day
  • Fair competition in the energy industry in the transition towards decarbonisation and the necessity of measuring true externalities of energy production to remove market distortions caused by subsidies for mature technology
  • Further investigation and improved statistical data and modelling for comprehensive EU heating and cooling policy
  • The potential for geothermal and other renewable technologies to cover the entire heating demand in 2050
It is the responsibility of policy-makers to provide affordable energy to everybody in a sustainable way. To this end, geothermal energy will clearly contribute to maintain reasonable costs for the entire society. However, it is crucial that there is a clear understanding of, and the convergence between, the prices to consumers and the costs to society, whereas the latter includes system costs and other externalities such as environmental pollution and the resulting public health impact.
