EV Update: Batteries as a Key Factor

Tuesday June 22, 2010, 8:30am-12:00pm

8:30am           Reception, Networking and Continental Breakfast

9:20am           Welcome/Introduction

9:30am           Visio Conference/ International Panel Discussion/ Interviews Frankfurt- San Francisco

Our International section will be a comparative overview of the European and American battery development and business models. What is happening, where can we collaborate, and what can we learn from each other?

Each country will answer each question in 5 min. segments

9:30am:
•    What are the main hurdles for battery development? Finding investment? Meeting potential business or technology partners? Manufacturing? Technical and material challenges?

9:45am:
•    What are the strategies of cost reduction in battery development: Cooperation between car makers and battery producers? Cooperation between car makers? Other options?

10:00am:
•    Is the battery part of the brand- a distinguished feature for carmakers? Are fixed installed batteries necessary for the brand and does battery swap lead to a faceless mobility?

10:15am:
•    What to expect from the governments electromobility plans and the related subsidies in regard to battery development? In the USA? In France? In Germany?

10:30am: Q&A

10:40am- 11:40am: Silicon Valley Panel Discussion for Palo Alto Audience

1.    Technical Innovations and Requirements

•    What are the different battery technologies and EV producers working on? What are their respective advantages/disadvantages?
•    What are the main requirements in regard to system design? Where lays the main optimization potential?

2.    Battery Management

•    What is the average battery recharge time? What technologies for recharging are available? Which procedures are needed to put in place?
•    Is battery swapping the only way to procure large amounts of energy into the car in few minutes time?

3.    Battery Life Cycle

•    Battery recycling and remerchandising
•    Battery waste removal

4.     Business Model

•    Who should own the EV battery? Customer, battery manufacturer, car manufacturer, charge spot service provider? What factors will determine the business model of EV batteries?
•    Will there be a restructuring of warrantee's based on charging life cycles rather than driven miles or amount of time one owned the battery?

5.     Which Battery type will Prevail?

•    What is the longest range and smallest weight of batteries today?
•    Are there battery systems which already meet the requirements for electric driving?

11:40am- 12:00pm:  Q&A
