The Tiburon Project: Tidal Electric Generation, Desalination, and Coral Reef Preservation

Tiburón Agua y Electricidad was established in response to a need for Renewable and Sustainable Electrical Energy produced in a way that would substantially reduce the expense of reverse osmosis desalination. Tiburón Agua y Electricidad is planning to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the proposed Hermosillo Desalination and Tidal Electric Generation Project. Their plan involves the installation of steel templates at the northern- and southernmost choke points of the Infiernillo Strait that would be electrochemically transformed into "limestone" through the BIOROCK® process. New habitat thus formed would continuously attract an increasing diversity of marine life. Turbines and Generators mounted on adjustable stanchions would be strategically placed in the tidal flow.

Proposed Electric Project Capacity 1,500 to 5,000 mw Proposed Desalination Plant Capacity 350,000 m3/day Production Costs
Energy cost - based on1,500 mw/h with a 1- to 5-year payoff @ $.10 US per kWh; Water cost - based on preliminary estimate of 350,000 m3/day @ $.55 US per m3.
With a capital-cost recovery estimate of five years for electrical generation and desalination, the project will become a viable, long-term and sustainable clean-energy franchise capable of satisfying the rapidly growing demand for water in the State of Sonora.
